How to choose a CV writer

Jen David • Oct 12, 2021

The decision to source professional help with your CV requires a financial investment – how can you be sure that you’re choosing the CV writer who will give you the most bang for your buck? There are various options – ranging from large CV mills to small independents. This blog explores the different options and considerations, so that you can be sure you’re making the right decision.

Should I choose an independent CV writer or a larger business?

Choosing an independent writer will require a bit more effort from you, to make sure you find the right one for your needs, but it will probably pay dividends in the long run.

The quality of CVs churned out by large CV mills can vary considerably – some of the writers will be highly experienced, some will be new to the job. Some will write full time, some will write for extra cash around another job. Some will be based in the UK, some might not even be native English speakers. There’s no guarantee which writer will be allocated to your order, so it can be a bit of a lottery.

You should also consider how much the writer will be paid, if you use a CV mill. The business will take a huge cut of your payment – sometimes as much as 85% - before they pass your order on to the CV writer. How much is your writer being paid? How many hours do you expect them to spend on your order for that much? What do expect from them for that price?

Choosing an independent CV writer will usually ensure that you receive a higher quality document and a more personal service, as their business reputation is based on customer satisfaction, referrals and recommendations.

You’ll need to consider the following questions before you make your choice either way:

How can I contact my CV writer?

Most independent writers pride themselves on providing a much more personal service than you would receive from a larger business. A phone consultation benefits both the client and the writer, enabling the client to explain their requirements, objectives and experience and the writer to understand the client’s needs, expectations and concerns. You should also make sure that you have the opportunity to contact your writer throughout the writing process – either by phone or email. You may need to provide additional information, check on progress or request changes. Some businesses charge an additional fee for a phone call, so double check what’s actually included in the advertised price.

What experience does my CV writer have?

When lockdown hit, many people found themselves stuck at home with time to kill. As a result, a new wave of people branding themselves as CV writers, with minimal (or no) experience, arrived. It’s worth checking out your CV writer on LinkedIn, or reading the About section of their website, to check that they actually have a background in CV writing. If they’ve been doing it for a few years, sustainably, they’re more likely to know their stuff than someone who’s just set themselves up with a laptop and some good intentions.

What do other clients say about my writer?

While it’s unlikely that any writer will publish bad reviews, LinkedIn and social media can provide an insight into what other clients are saying about your chosen CV writer. If the reviews align with what you’re looking for, you’re probably on to a good thing.

What qualifications does my writer have?

Absolutely anyone can set themselves up as a CV writer in the UK – no qualifications are necessary. However, you may like to look for credentials such as experience in your sector, membership of the British Association of CV Writers, an academic qualification that requires a high level of literacy or a degree in a relevant subject.

What services does my CV writer provide?

If you just want a CV, that’s fine! But many CV writers also provide additional services that could ease your path into a new role. LinkedIn profile writing, cover letter writing, interview coaching and career coaching are just a few. Many also offer a discount on CV updates, which can save you paying for a whole new CV when you progress into another role. What would help you most?

Can I get a free CV review?

Free services can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, you’re getting valuable advice from a professional – for free! Some reviews, however – particularly from CV mills – are designed to knock your confidence and subtly pressure you into purchasing services that you don’t really need. Several CV writing services send exactly the same review to everyone, no matter how good their CV. Make sure that any review you receive is personalised to your CV and not designed to sell you a product you don’t need.

Is the pricing competitive?

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys, as the saying goes. Low-cost options won’t provide the value or quality you’re looking for. There are also very high-cost options – but they don’t necessarily provide more value than mid-range options. It’s up to you to decide how much you’re willing to pay and whether the investment is likely to be worth it. Check out a few options to see which one will work best for your needs and your budget.

Does the CV writer trade on ATS fears?

Plenty of CV writers win business by scaremongering about ATS systems and suggesting that they have the secret to beating them. If you’re not sure what they are, check out my article here. Yes, they exist, but no, they’re not your enemy - nor will they reject your CV. There’s no great secret to writing an ATS-compatible CV, just a few simple rules to bear in mind. A well-written and well-presented document will probably meet most ATS requirements without much extra effort.

Is your data secure and your privacy respected?

With CV writing services being delivered, in the main, remotely, it’s important that your personal data is secure. If you don’t want your current managers or colleagues to know that you’re job hunting, it’s also important that your CV writer understands the need to communicate discreetly and sensitively. Check the small print to make sure that your data isn’t being passed to a third party and will be treated confidentially.

Where does CV Shed fit into all this?
